About Quondong
If you want the pleasure of an escape from the modern world, hear the silence, experience solitude, see vast skies with unique clarity of light, Quondong is for you.
A working merino station.
Quondong is a working merino sheep station. Since 2020, after the driest year on record we took this opportunity to take a new direction, regarding our merino flock and our land management. We are no longer mulesing sheep, which is considered extremely fool hardy but with a change in the genetics to Soft Rolling Skinned merinos we hope to be vindicated.
SRS (Soft Rolling Skin)
The SRS® (Soft Rolling Skin)® technology for breeding Merino sheep was developed by the late Dr Jim Watts and applied to flocks in Australia since 1998. The system is based on producing wools of exceptional quality by selecting Merino sheep for low primary fibre diameter, high fibre density, and high fibre length. Genetic selection for these fibre traits, both visually and objectively, is done in the expectation that fleece weight will increase, fibre diameter will decrease, and fibre quality will improve. The animals are environmentally fit, easy to shear, and easy to manage. They have been bred to be free of skin wrinkle (plain bodied) and naturally resistant to fly strike, and consequently are not mulesed.
Custodians
We are also the custodians of a very beautiful and fragile land, on which we must lightly step. We are therefore embracing “Ecologically Sustainable Rangelands Management” practices. Stop, look, and experience this vast wilderness. There are few places like this left in the world.
Experience the true Australian outback of our pioneering forebears.
Embark on a journey back in time to the rugged and raw Australian outback, the very same untamed land that shaped our pioneering forebears into the resilient and determined people they were.
